CheckBox: Reduce memory usage: Not really work?

CheckBox: Reduce memory usage: Not really work?

In the preferences there is the possibility of selection: "Reduce memory usage"

But I can see no difference.

If I use an "Auto-Update Folder" to get the Likes. On my MacBook (with 16GB) it lasts for less than 30 min and i run "out of memory"

On my desktop Mac Pro with 28! GB it lasts for less than 50 min and flirt is crashing everytime.
(although nearly 6GB RAM are still free, just before "flirt" crashed)

It makes no difference for both cases, if I select the Checkbox or not.

This setting (the checkbox "Reduce memory usage") only affects certain scenarios?

What the memory usage option does is turn on lazy fetching for the controllers. Basically it tries to not store most of the data in memory, but it only works so well. If you do a select-all it will still load all the information from the database. It's another Apple class that I need to rewrite to work better. It also wouldn't affect new things being created, for whatever reason it's harder than hell to get Core Data to release it's in-memory cache even when everything has been saved to disk.

Also the biggest problem with memory usage is the fact that Flirt uses Garbage Collection, I'm in the process of switching over to ARC (Automatic Reference Counting) which should make memory management a lot better, but it's more difficult that I anticipated.
